Below is a piece written by Peter Greener our wonderful Ashwell Village Museum Curator. He frequently writes articles for our monthly magazine Ashwell Village News. I just love imagining what was happening in bygone village times.
Summer activities were well under way during June 1926. There was a holiday spirit in the air with excursions to the seaside. About 30 members of the Bushel & Strike Outing Club went to Yarmouth by motor bus. This was most unusual as these trips were usually undertaken on special train journeys. The outing was apparently enjoyed by all. The Girls of the County Council School went off to Hunstanton and had an enjoyable day with a picnic. Less adventurous was the Sunday School Treat whose members journeyed to a meadow at Mobb's Hole Farm for their entertainment. The Congregational Church celebrated their Sunday School Anniversary with special services.
The two cricket teams had a very busy month. The First XI lost to Radwell, Hitchin Blue Cross and Henlow Village but beat Arlesey, while the Second XI lost to all their matches against teams from the same villages.
The much-anticipated Garden Fete at Westbury House, in aid of Congregational funds, went ahead successfully. It was followed up by a 'Flannel Dance' in the Village Hall but this was a disappointment as only 30 or 40 attended.
The W.I. forsook the Village Hall this month for an Open Meeting in grounds of Ashwell Bury by invitation of Mrs Fordham. They had a talk on raising flowers, an account of the Annual Meeting held in London, members shown over house, and the meeting ended with a selection of country dances.
